Privacy policy

How Caption Float processes captions, remembers preferences, and handles channel subscriptions.

Last updated: September 17, 2026

Video and captions

Caption Float inspects the current page address to select a compatible caption adapter. Video elements, caption text, and timing are processed locally to display the floating player. Caption text and full page addresses are not retained by the extension or sent to a developer-operated server.

On YouTube, the extension may ask the page’s player to reload its caption response. The response comes from YouTube and is parsed locally. The extension does not download or execute remote JavaScript or WebAssembly.

Preferences on your device

Window size, video/transcript split, text size, word highlighting, caption line layout, and the selected mode for a channel or website are stored in chrome.storage.local. These preferences remain until cleared or the extension is uninstalled.

Subscriptions and network requests

If you subscribe to YouTube channels, channel IDs and names are stored in chrome.storage.sync. Chrome can synchronize this list across browsers signed into your account, subject to your Chrome sync settings. This list is therefore separate from captions processed only on your device.

The extension requests public RSS feeds and, when resolving a channel link, channel pages directly from YouTube without credentials. YouTube receives network request information as it does when serving other requests. Selecting a video opens its YouTube watch page. See Google’s privacy policy.

Why permissions are needed

  • activeTab and scripting: access the page when you invoke the player and run the packaged video and caption code.
  • YouTube host access: show the video hover button and request channel pages and public feeds.
  • storage: remember preferences and subscriptions.
  • sidePanel and contextMenus: display the channel list and offer the channel subscription action.

Data use

Caption Float has no developer-operated backend, analytics, advertising, extension accounts, or payment system. The developer does not receive your video or caption content. Data handled by the extension is used for the floating player and its related subscription features, not sold or used for advertising.

Information obtained through Chrome APIs is handled in accordance with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy’s Limited Use requirements.

Your choices

Close the floating window to return the video to its original page. Remove channel subscriptions from the side panel, and manage synchronization through Chrome settings. Uninstalling removes local extension preferences; manage synchronized subscriptions separately rather than assuming that uninstalling one copy removes them from every device.
